Life in Chub Kroam: Yen Yin’s Story

Since she was very young, Yen Yin knew that, one day, she would drop out of school to help support her younger siblings. Now a 23 year old, Yen has helped her mother support her siblings for many years.

Yen lives with her mother, father, and younger sister in Chub Kroam village and travels into town each day to work at a clothing store.

Yen’s aunt lives closer to the children’s school, so she houses them and Yen sends her money for food. Back at home, Yen, her parents, and her baby sister are living in extreme poverty.

“We live hand to mouth,” her mother, Yaung, said. “It gets harder when someone is sick at home.”

And someone is sick almost every month, costing the family expensive medical fees. Yaung’s words seemed to strengthen her daughter’s convictions.

“I am willing to work for anything in order to earn for my family,” she told us.

Chub Kroam village is without safe water or sanitation. Everyone defecates in open fields, and heavy rains wash all contaminants into their only source of drinking water, a pond near their homes.

Yen’s mother gathers the, dipping her container into the grey water twice a day. Sickness is rampant.

With Yen’s father working in construction on and off and her mother caring for her baby sister, life is difficult for her family. Still, Yen and her mother have big dreams.

“I wish all of my children would have their own business,” Yaung said. “I wish to have a proper home too.”

Yen’s greatest hope is simply that all of her siblings would stay in school and find good jobs.

You can help Yen’s family and others is Chub Kroam village today. Your gift will provide health training for each household, plus a new, safe water source near their village.

Lasting change means more than just building a well. Compelled by the love of Christ, local Lifewater staff work house by house to teach families healthy habits that will impact generations to come. With safe water, Yen and her family can stop becoming ill. They can work more, save, and make their dreams a reality.

Here’s what happens when you sponsor a village water project through Lifewater:

Partner with a village. Your gift kickstarts a community water project.
Teach healthy habits. Small changes make a big impact on family health.
Build a well. The village contributes up to 15% for construction.

February 21, 2019: Water Committee formed

Good news! Chub Kroam has selected water committee members to manage the new village water source.

Forming a water committee is a key step toward establishing a safe water source in a village. Committees are made up of local men and women who manage the well and collect fees, ensuring the community’s investment lasts for generations to come.

October 1, 2018: CLTS Complete

In Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), each village goes through exercises that reveal how their current practices are making them sick, such as identifying all the places where feces are contaminating their environment. This important step equips communities to be knowledgeable about their health and willing to make changes.

All gifts are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law. Contributions are solicited with the understanding that Lifewater has complete control over the use of all donated funds. Our Board-approved policy is that all gifts designated for a specific project be applied to that project, with up to ten percent used for administrative and fundraising expenses. Occasionally we receive more contributions for a given project than can be wisely applied to that project. When that happens, we use these funds to meet a similar pressing need.
